Now the period of this legislation is going to expire soon and if we, all those who love jailbreaking the devices, don’t act promptly, the copyright office might remove the exemption. If DMCA office doesn’t extent the exemption period, the jailbreaking of iPhone will no longer remain legal but iPad jailbreaking will even then be a legal process.

Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is a donor-funded non-profit organization and which fights for freedom primarily in the courts, tells us how we can help make iPhone jailbreaking legal again. All we have to do is to submit comments to the Copyright Office mentioning why the jailbreaking is important and how it can help us.

How You Can Help – The Copyright Office needs to hear from people who depend on the ability to jailbreak to write, use, and/or tinker with independent software (from useful apps to essential security fixes) for smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. You can submit comments online at this link.

Here are some questions you might want to address in your comments:

1. Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?
2. What’s your background (i.e., are you a developer, hobbyist, academic, independent researcher, user, etc.)?
3. What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?
4. Please explain why you want to jailbreak this device. What limitations do you face if you aren’t able to jailbreak it? Is there software you couldn’t run, computing capabilities you wouldn’t have, cool things you couldn’t do, etc.?
5. If you’re a developer, did an online application store or console manufacturer reject your app or game? If so, what reasons did they give?
6. Is there anything else you want to tell the Copyright Office?

Concrete examples will help show the Copyright Office why they should renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking. Send your comments to the Copyright Office athttp://www.copyright.gov/1201/comment-forms/. Where the form says “Comment number(s) of proposed classes of works to which you are responding,” enter a “3” if you’re writing about game consoles or a “5” if you’re writing about smartphones or tablets.

You can submit your comments by February 10 at 5PM Eastern time.

I have used and tested many tweaks and apps which give you quick access to these three frequently used options of the iPhone. After you installed WeeSlide, go to Settings > Notifications and tap on WeeSlide. Now turn on the switch and you will see a new bar of controls.

This new version of iOS 5 untethered jailbreak for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S doesn’t include any major changes or improvements. It has some cosmetic (UI) changes and a potential bug fix for Win32.

If you have already jailbroken your device, you won’t need to re-run this tool. In fact it will detect the already jailbroken device and won’t allow you to proceed further. But if you think you need to re-jailbreak it, you can restore a fresh iOS version on your device and apply this new version.

The jailbreak method is same as we have mentioned in our previous post. In fact it is very simple. Simply run the tool, click the “jailbreak” button and let Absinthe do its work on your device.

In case you want to get an unlock for iPhone 4S in future, you must not upgrade your device to iOS 5.0.1 if it is still on iOS 5.0.

The untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreaking with Absinthe is very simple just like Greenpois0n. All you have to do to follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Download Absinthe for your operating system.

Step 2: Unzip and press the “jailbreak” button.

Step 3: Wait and be patient. The restore process will take some time. Once it is completed, launch the absinthe icon from homescreen of your iPhone. It will reboot your device.

The jailbreak process with Absinthe is very simple.

Step 1: Back up your device with latest iTunes version.

Step 2: Download Absinthe. It is currently available for Mac only, but Windows version is also coming very soon.

Step 3: Launch Absinthe and press the “Jailbreak” button.

Step 4: Now wait. The phone will show “Restoring in Progress” message. Leave it connect until the restore completes.

Step 5: Once the restore is complete, you will see an absinthe icon on your homescreen. Launch it which will load greenpoison site for a while.

Step 6: Greenpoison site will reboot your device. After it loads back up, the cydia icon have replaced the Absinthe icon.

Now enjoy your untethered jailbroken iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Apple introduced a more powerful processor named A5-process in iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Due to this new technology the existing bootrom level exploits don’t work on these devices. But finally the hackers have managed to find a way to break these devices.

According to the update from Pod2g’s blog:

A tool named Absinthe and developped by the Chronic Dev Team will install the untether on your device. Also the iPhone Dev Team will release a CLI (command line) tool to help diagnose issues and repair things if it goes wrong.

This is a little scary I know, but the chance you break something is really small, since we made lots of tests to verify the process on different devices. But it is the first time we use the backup / restore functions of iTunes to install software, and there are maybe things we are not aware of.

MuscleNerd has already told us some details of upcoming jailbreak but this is the first time Pod2g mentioned the exact name of iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak. MuscleNerd provides us the latest update on Corona A5 jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Corona A5 jailbreak will be available in the form of an app (software) just like Greenpois0n. The same jailbreak will also be incorporated in the next release of Redsnow.

Here we are quoting the exact post from iPhone Dev Team’s blog:

Ever since the December release of @pod2g’s “corona” untether for iOS 5.x on A4 and earlier devices, all eyes have been on the attempts to extend it to the A5 devices: the iPhone4S and iPad2.  Due to the combined efforts of @pod2g and members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team, we’re nearly ready for a general release!  All technical hurdles dealing with the underlying technique have been overcome, and it’s now all about making the jailbreak as bug free as possible.

On his blog, @pod2g playfully nicknamed the combined effort a “dream team”.  It’s an ironic name, because the past few weeks have left everyone involved with very little sleep and the opportunity to dream :) But we’re now near the final stages of testing the public version of the jailbreak.  Please allow time to clean up any remaining bugs in the jailbreak clients.

Jailbreak programs:

To be as flexible as possible, the A5 version of the corona jailbreak will take multiple forms:

• Chronic Dev have incorporated the overall flow into a GUI that runs on your Mac or PC
• iPhone Dev have incorporated the exact same flow into a command-line interface (CLI).  This will allow us to help users through individual steps of the jailbreak manually, to both help the user and help improve the overall flow.  Although the CLI will also allow the user to perform the entire jailbreak from beginning to end, we anticipate it will be more useful in debugging the occasional errors.  The CLI currently has over 20 individual options (in addition to the single “jailbreak” option) that should be useful during debug after the GUI release.
• Once all the bugs in the flow are worked out, we’ll also incorporate it into the redsn0w GUI (but still leave the CLI freely available too).  In order to maximize the chances of the jailbreak working for everyone, the redsn0w GUI will use native Apple iTunes libraries — this technique is slightly different than how the Chronic Dev GUI handles communications, and should provide nice combined coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.

Firmware:

The supported firmware versions will be:

• iPhone4S: 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
• iPad2: 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPhone4S owners looking to maximize their chances of achieving an eventual software-based carrier unlock should be staying at 5.0.  Everyone else should be at 5.0.1.  If you’re an iPhone4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the BB by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open.

Support:

The overall flow used by the GUI and CLI to inject the A5 corona jailbreak has never been done before, and there may be unforeseen problems once it’s released to the public.  It’s very important for you to sync your data, photos, and music before attempting any version of this jailbreak.  We’ll be watching the comments section below for signs of any widespread problems, but please be aware that you jailbreak at your own risk!

Sn0wbreeze v2.9 supports only iOS 5.0.1. The users who are still having devices running on iOS 5.0 or below can now safely update their devices to the latest firmware build. However, those users who rely on unlock have to install a custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware on their devices after preserving the baseband. And this is what sn0wbreeze does, i.e., preservers the baseband, in addition to jailbreaking the firmware.

Besides the basic functions Sn0wbreeze 2.9 allows us to remove the OTA base from Settings.app. This new version also brings UI improvements.

Earlier today we reported about the the update of Corona 1.0-5 by Chronic Dev Team which also fixes the broken iBooks on iOS 5.0.1 but Corona is available through Cydia store only.

If you are jailbreaking your device for the first time, you will have to use Redsn0w 0.9.10 b4, which will do all the jobs but if you have already jailbroken device, you should either re-run Redsn0w on it or install Coronal Package from Cydia.

Update #4: The b4 version of redsn0w incorporates the 5.0.1 fix for iBooks, and also for sporadic problems with launchctl.  Thanks to @xvolks for merging the iBooks (sandbox) fix from @comex’s github into the overall corona untether from @pod2g!  As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

TIP: If auto-detection fails and redsn0w tells you no identifying data was found, you can always pre-select the appropriate 5.0.1 IPSW using “Extras->Select IPSW”.

As we know untethered jailbreak breaks the Apple restrictions and allows us to install any third-party app and tweak, but it also contains some bugs. The current iOS 5.0.1 untehered jailbreak causes iBooks and some other apps to crash on launch.

Cororna 1.0-5 tweak available through Cydia store not only converts the tethered jailbreak into untethered but this time also fixes the iBooks and crashing of other apps.

If you have already jailbroken your device with Redsn0w, you can safely install the latest release of Corona on your device to fix the iBooks issues. For this purpose launch Cydia, go to Changes tab and tap the Refresh button on top. After the repos are refreshed, search for Corona and install it.
