Google Sidewiki Lanuched: Universal Commenting on any Site

Google sidewiki is a browser sidebar that enables you to leave a comment or add any information to any page on the internet. Integrated with google toolbar, it lets you to write about your site if you are owner of the site and your entry will remain on the top of all entries.

Here we will tell you step by step method of installing and using of this sidewiki service.

  • First of all install the Google Toolbar with Sidewiki. Currently it is only available for Firefox and IE browsers.
  • After the installations finishes, restart your browser.
  • Now your will see Google Toolbar installed on your browser. Visit any page and click on Sidewiki on your Google Toolbar as shown in picture.

  • Now click on the arrows >> , and the sidebar will open. See picture below.

  • Now you can leave any comment about that page using this sidewiki feature. You can also share your comments on facebook, twitter or email to your friends.

  • As you surf the Web, the Sidewiki button’s color lets you know whether Sidewiki entries are available for the page you’re viewing:

yellow sidewiki buttonA yellow Sidewiki icon indicates that people have left Sidewiki comments for the page you’re viewing. To see these entries, click the button or the blue tab on the Sidewiki notification bar to open the Sidewiki sidebar.

white Sidewiki buttonA white Sidewiki icon indicates that no Sidewiki entries are available for the page you’re viewing. Be the first to leave a comment! Click the button to open a blank Sidewiki entry form in the sidebar. You can create a Sidewiki entry about the whole page, or make it specific to a particular section of the page. To make an entry about a specific section of the page, just highlight the section of the page with your mouse before clicking the Sidewiki button. After you’ve created your entry, other people with Sidewiki can see and rate the usefulness of your comment.

gray Sidewiki buttonA gray Sidewiki icon indicates that commenting is unavailable for the page you’re viewing. This icon appears if you’re visiting an SSL (https) encrypted page or if Toolbar is temporarily unable to access the Sidewiki service.

  • If you’re a webmaster, you can leave a special Sidewiki entry on pages of your site. Your most recent entry will appear with a green background at the top of the Sidewiki sidebar, above other entries as shown in the above screenshot of my site.

Follow these steps to create a webmaster entry:

  1. Add and verify your site in Google Webmaster Tools. This process links your site to your Google Account.
  2. Once a site is linked to your Google Account, visit your page and click the Sidewiki button to create an entry.
  3. Select the ‘Write as the page owner’ checkbox in the entry form.
  4. Click Publish.
  • You can also upload your picture to google profile to show it with your entry.
