This news was broken by none other than MuscleNerd himself, member of the iPhone Dev Team. He tweeted:

Uh oh…the days of restoring with saved SHSH blobs are nearing an end Apple is getting much smarter with the APTicket

Everything is now in place for Apple to do on the AP side what it does on the BB side (nonces with signing windows)

They can’t undo the access limera1n provides (tethered JB booting) but they’re about to eliminate SHSH blob replay attacks

They’ll be enforcing this starting in the LLB. Pre-5.0 restores w/saved blobs will remain OK (with older iTunes though)

These four tweets from MuscleNerd pretty much explain what the whole deal is. It would be evident to you by now that Apple is indeed working to stop iOS firmware downgrades by eliminating SHSH blobs reply attacks usually initiated by TinyUmbrella or Cydia server for validating an older firmware version which Apple has stopped officially signing.

However, this is not enabled in iOS 5 beta 2. Meaning that if you have saved SHSH blobs of previous firmware, you should downgrade now, as when iOS 5 GM build releases, it would be impossible to downgrade from it then. At least it is being said that SHSH blob replay attacks will be eliminated in iOS 5 GM release.

The Dev Team further explains this on their blog:

This will only affect restores starting at iOS5 and onward, and Apple will be able to flip that switch off and on at will (by opening or closing the APTicket signing window for that firmware, like they do for the BBTicket).  geohot’s limera1n exploit occurs before any of this new checking is done, so tethered jailbreaks will still always be possible for devices where limera1n applies.  Also, restoring to pre-5.0 firmwares with saved blobs will still be possible (but you’ll soon start to need to use older iTunes versions for that). Note that iTunes ultimately is *not* the component that matters here..it’s the boot sequence on the device starting with the LLB.

So does this mean that once iOS 5 is publicly released this fall, there will be no way of downgrading from it? Yes, it does mean that, until and unless the devs come up with an entirely new solution for downgrading iOS firmwares to older versions.

There is one more news. Ovi Music Store is now accessible right from your Nokia n900 where it is available. You can use your inbuilt browser to go to music.ovi.com and download your favourite songs in DMR-Free format.

N900 can be updated to PR 1.3 with different methods. The easiest one is via OTA (over-the-air) update.

1. Select the status area and New updates.
2. Select Update all, or select the packages to install and Continue.
3. Confirm the installation.

Before starting the update process, it is highly recommended that you backup all your data on the phone. Though the process is very simple but this site don’t take any responsibility for any type of damage.

Step 1: Download the latest Samsung Kies version and install it on your Windows PC (download link at the bottom of this post).

Step 2: Connect your phone with PC and open the Kies.

Step 3: Minimize the Kies and make it sure it remains open during the whole update process.

Step 4: Launch Registry Editor of Windows. For this purpose, open the RUN box and type regedi and press ENTER.

Step 5: Naviagate to this location “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\”

Step 6: Now you will see different folders named 1, 2, 3 etc. Open each folder and find that  one folder which contains your mobile’s current firmware and IMEI information.

Step 7: After locating the particular folder, change the following 3 strings as shown below:

SoftwareRevision = I9000XXJF3/I9000SWC/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3

ProductCode = GT-I9000HKDXEE

Step 8: Close the registry editor and do REFRESH several times.

Step 9: Maximize Kies and click on “Firmware Upgrade” button. You will see a new upgrade available for your mobile. Install it and enjoy the latest Froyo on your Samsung Galaxy S.

In the beginning of this month a PR 1.2 was released by some guys which was not officially announced. Today a official release of new maemo verion 1.2 is being rolled out for Nokia N900 in UK. The rest of world will receive the update tomorrow Wednesday, May 26.

This new version of Maemo 5 comes with many new games such as Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug, and GoGadget.

Other Important Changes:

The new features in mamo version 1.2 for Nokia N900 are:

• Qt 4.6.2 is now preinstalled on the OS.
• Changes for the video recording in the Camera Application.
• Video calling can be accessed through contacts.
• Can dial USSD Codes.
• No more “More” menu in application launcher, and is rearrangeable.
• Virtual Keyboard has been modified and now looks different.
• File Manager is now able to share any file and/or folder.
• Typing in Application Manager starts a search (like it is in Contacts or Media Player).
• Status area is now reachable in portrait mode
• Portrait mode Virtual Keyboard for browser. *Not yet confirmed* (Source)

Good news for all Motorola Cliq XT users ! Motorola has released a new software/firmware for motorola Cliq XT. If you have not received the software update notification, you will get soon because it takes time for propagation.

The bad news is that the update will not be Android 2.1.

The update brings many improvements like strong data connections, less freeze-ups and few force-closes. The other changes in new update are:

Other than GOTA method (Google Over the Air), here are other methods to check the software update.

A public release of new firmware for Nokia N900 (maemo) has been leaked by a Chinese website. When the link to this firmware was posted on maemo forums, it was considered unauthentic but soon the experienced users tested it and it was found to be a real thing.

We were expecting  a stable and public release of MeeGo firmware for N900, but Nokia is going to release another maemo version for N900 device.

Change Log for 10.2010.16-8 a.k.a PR 1.2:

Nokia is giving equal importance to its low-end mobiles. After firmware update for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a new firmware version 20.0.005 has been rolled out for Nokia 5230.

Though the present firmware is very stable, but this new version brings many improvements. The most important change is kinetic scrolling in main menu.

The unofficial changes are:

• The music player gets a new layout
• Kinetic scrolling in the main menu
• Photo quality from camera has been increased, but it is not significant
• The speed of overall system has been increased
• Ovi Sync has been added on the desktop
• Hacking is not working on this new version

This firmware will be available via both FOTA and NSU methods and it will be available for your product code soon because the propagation might take some time.

There is news that new firmware for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been released. Firmware v50.0.005 brings performance improvement, new functions and some bug fixes. Read the updates at the end of this post.

Though I checked the availability of firmware for my 5800 through FOTA method, but still it is not available for my handset.

Update 1: This firmware is still not available via both FOTA and NSU methods. It seems that either it is a custom firmware or it is under beta testing and will be released within 1-2 days.

Update 2: I just checked again and found that new firmware 50.0.005 is available for my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic via NSU. There is no update available via OTA method.

Update 3: The firmware is now available via FOTA method. Finally I have updated my 5800 XpressMusic and found following changes (before formatting my phone) other than the above mentioned:

• Now keypad lock can be set in seconds. (I think this feature was not present in v40).
• Web page scrolling is more smooth.
• Web page display gets full screen after few seconds.

Sony Ericsson is giving special importance to its all Xperia series mobile phones. Today a full software update has been released for Windows Mobile based Xperia X2. The update is released in certain markets but soon it will be rolled out in other parts of the world.

The new software update brings enhanced performance and stability along with many new features. You can update the software with SE Software Updater.

According to the SE Blogs  the important changes in this update are:

- MR1 is built on a new core platform release from Microsoft including a newer version of IE6

- Stability improvements are everywhere with focus on SlideView, Panel manager and TileWave

- Performance improvements focused on rotation and touch performance, the camera, web browsing, the software keyboard and audio streaming

- New features are added like FM radio, Video calling, Auto-lock and Fast GPS which allows for a faster first fix to the GPS signal

- SlideView 2.0 gives better usability throughout with a fresh design; and new actions are build in like new/reply/delete/edit capabilities in messaging and calendar. Music scrolling/searching and the mini-player have also been enhanced

- The new dialer took a big step forward with four easy buttons giving easy access to the dial-pad, favorites, call activity and contacts. We increased the target hit area in contacts for finger friendliness and added user friendly redial functionality

- Based on feedback from you, we really worked hard on the software keyboard (XT9) by improving speed and touch responsiveness

A new minor firmware has been released by Nokia for its powerful Nokia N97. The size of the firmware update is only 4.3 and currently it is available through FOTA method.

Currently no official changelog is available, but some confirmed changes in this update are:

• Many bugs fixed and enhancement in general performance
• Auto-rotate display set to ON by default.
• Mass memory content updates (applies to new production only)
• OviSuite 2.0 + OviPlayer installation files preloaded
• Preloaded Maps data updated to version # 23

As said above this update is available through Over the Air method but soon you can update your N97 via Nokia Software Updater. Though N97 has got UDP feature but still it is recommended that you back up your device first.
