Redsnow 0.9.9 b1 also brings a new feature related to SHSH blobs. It fetches, verifies and submits the blobs to Cydia server. It can also query and stitch the blobs to a stock or custom iPSW file. This new version also helps to fix the recovery loop and errors such as 1015 faced during custom iOS restore process.

• uses DFU mode to try to automatically determine which device and FW you have
• fetches pieces of public IPSWs from Apple (once).  Non-public IPSWs must be provided manually (once).  It then caches those pieces for future use.
• “Just boot” is a tethered boot.  Uses whatever “Preferences” you’ve set for boot logo and kernel boot-args
• “Pwned DFU” puts your device in a pwned DFU state for some of the iTunes stuff detailed below
• “Recovery fix” gets past 1015 types of errors (when baseband portion of restore fails).  Should work on iOS5 beta too
• “Select IPSW” is for picking non-public IPSWs, or overriding auto-detection
• “SHSH blobs” has a bunch of options…
• “Fetch” – fetch current PARTIAL blobs on device.  Should complete in under 10 or 15 seconds.  Puts the set of PARTIAL of blobs on your computer as a plist.  Checks if Cydia already has a full set for this device and build.  If not, it submits this PARTIAL set and returns Cydia’s acknowledgement or rejection
• “Verify”  – cryptographically verifies existing blob files from either redsn0w, TinyUmbrella, or Cydia server.  You can select a whole bunch of blobs to verify at once if you want (like the TinyUmbrella directory)
• “Submit”  – both verifies and submits one or more blob files to Cydia.  This lets you copy your entire TinyUmbrella cache of blobs up to the Cydia server
• “Query” - queries the Cydia server for all available FULL or PARTIAL blobs for a given set of ECIDs
• “Stitch” – stitches either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a STOCK or CUSTOM IPSW

1. FULL blobs stitched to a STOCK IPSW gives you a completely self-contained signed IPSW that iTunes will accept without any tricks (no need to go into pwned DFU mode, no need to start TinyUmbrella TSS server, no need to redirect to Cydia server for blobs)
2. PARTIAL blobs stitched to any IPSW requires you to go into pwned DFU mode before running iTunes.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.
3. stitching either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a CUSTOM IPSW also requires a pwned DFU start before iTunes restores.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.
4. stitching is NOT yet supported on iPhones (well, at least not tested).  Need to work out the baseband part of the restore process.
5. will eventually support fetching the blobs directly from Cydia instead of a file on your computer

If you are following the updates from Apple, you must know that Apple released iOS 5 beta 6 last Friday for developers. Developers are those users who have purchased the membership of Apple’s Developer Program which costs $99 per year and who can download the beta releases and install them on their devices. However if you don’t have membership but the UDID of your device is registered with Apple, you can install the beta version on your iPhone after downloading it from some sharing sites. In case, niether you are a developer and nor the UDID of your iDevice is registered with Apple, you can even then install the beta relase on your device and bypass the UDID check using the recently released Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 6.

Anyways, we don’t recommend our readers to use any illegal way to get iOS beta 6 on their idevices. In fact you should wait for the final and public build of iOS 5 which is around the corner. The today’s release of Redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 6 is meant for the developers of jailbreak apps who also have a legal account with Apple’s Developer Program.

Update #6: We’ve released redsn0w 0.9.8b6 to jailbreak iOS5 beta6 (point it directly at the beta6 IPSW).  Two important notes about this version: (1) Please let your device boot normally to IOS5b6 and do a clean shutdown (slide to power off) before jailbreaking.  (2) Boot logos have intentionally been disabled for now, so you’ll see a black screen on tethered boots (you can re-enable logos or verbose boot with command-line options if you really want them back).

Due increased sensitivity to abrupt filesystem shutdowns in IOS5b6, it’s very important that you do a clean shutdown before running redsn0w.

Yesterday Apple released iOS 4.3.4 to patch the PDF hole present in Safari that led Comex to develop JailbreakMe 3.0 which jailbreaks all idevices running on iOS 4.3.3.

As we have told earlier that iOS 4.3.4 only brings a security fix, so it is advised by iPhone Dev Team to all those users who want to keep their devices jailbreakable not to update to iOS 4.3.4.

Update #3: For the convenience of kernel hackers like @comex and @i0n1c, we have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2.  The vast majority of people will want to stay back at 4.3.3 because that’s where the untethered jailbreak is! There are no new features in 4.3.4 — only fixes for jailbreak exploits.

Also, this is a good time to remind everyone (since we’re still seeing confusion about this): iPad2 owners with a baseband (3G or CDMA) cannot currently use saved blobs to go back to 4.3.3 once the signing window is closed. This is unlike every other device, so don’t be confused!  iPad2 owners with basebands should stay away from all updates to maintain the jailbreak!

It is to be noted that Redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 3 provides tethered iOS 4.3.4 jailbreak on all supported devices, meaning you have connect your device with PC for successful start-up after every reboot.

If you have already jailbroken your idevice after updating it to iOS 5 beta 3, you don’t need to restore fresh iOS 5 beta 3 on it. Simply re-run this latest version of Redsn0w on it and boot it tethered.

However if you didn’t jailbreak your idevice yet but have updated it to iOS 5 beta 3, you can simply follow the step by step guide jailbreak guide but point Redsn0w to iOS 5 beta 1 when you are prompted to browse for .iPSW file.

It is to be noted that current Redsn0w or any other jailbreak tool like Sn0wbreeze provides tethered jailbreak on all iOS 5 beta releases. The untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 will be developed/released after Apple pushes the public and stable iOS 5 version. In tethered jailbreak you have to connect your device with PC on every reboot to get successful jailbroken state on your iDevice.

As you know Apple released iOS 5 beta 3 along with iTunes 10.5 beta 3 for iPhone 4, iPad 1, 2, iPod Touch 3G and 4G and iPhone 3GS earlier today. In beta 3 release many bugs are fixed and performance is enhanced. You will see a clear difference after installing this new update on your iPhone. Though no new features are included in beta 3 release, but a lot of bugs are fixed in it. Read our previous post to read the full changelog and to check what is changed in this new release.

At the moment the jailbreak for iOS 5 beta 3 is tethered on all idevices except iPad 2. iPad 2 can not be jailbroken with Redsn0w or even with any other jailbreak tool except JailbreakMe 3.0 which can jailbreak iPad 2 running on iOS 4.3.3.

We have already covered the complete jailbreak process in “Jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch with Redsnow 0.9.8” post. The only difference in iOS 5 beta 1 jailbreak and iOS 5 beta 3 jailbreak is that you have to point Redsn0w to iOS 5 beta 1 when you are asked to browse for .iPSW file.

• Update your device to latest iOS 5 beta 3 version.
• Launch Redsnow 0.9.8 beta 1 and point it to iOS 5 beta 1 version.
• Complete the jailbreak process.

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps.  (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens.  PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost.  You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now”  to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari.  If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

The way redsn0w works, you will very likely be able to use this on upcoming iOS5 betas, just by continuing to point redsn0w at the 5.0b1 IPSW.  So keep that IPSW handy!

Previously, MuscleNerd had shown everyone iOS 5 beta 1 jailbroken using Limera1n and a tethered boot. We knew that it was possible, and were just waiting for a release. Now, redsn0w 0.9.8b1 lets you do an iOS 5 beta 1 jailbreak on your own.

You can already download iOS 5 beta 1 for these reasons, on your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, first and second generation iPad and 3G, 4G iPod touch. Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 will jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 on all these devices, however it is recommended that you do not try even upgrading to iOS 5 beta 1, if you rely on a software unlock for your iPhone, as it will make the iPhone, useless.

Also, redsn0w 0.9.8b1 has only been released for Mac as yet. MuscleNerd was of the impression that iTunes 10.5 beta wasn’t even available for Windows. However, a Windows version of redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 tethered is coming soon now.

The official release notes are as follows:

… three in a row!  Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that@i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works.  That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works.  We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!

Today’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!).  It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak.  The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2:

• iPhone3GS
• iPhone4 (GSM)
• iPod touch 3G
• iPod touch 4G
• iPad1
• AppleTV2G (v4.3 8F202)

Some things to note:

1. ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w!  Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband. There are plenty of tutorials for both redsn0w and PwnageTool at shoutpedia.  Or feel free to ask away in our comments section below.
2. ultrasn0w has been updated to v1.2.3 to be compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and earlier (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.3.
3. By popular demand, redsn0w now allows you to enable multitasking gestures (although most will find it useful only on iPads).
4. iPad2 update:  The iPad2 jailbreak remains under development.  As you may know, the original exploit @comex developed in the first week of the iPad2 release was mysteriously fixed by Apple within days of its development.  Partly because of this, don’t expect much public discussion of the iPad2 jailbreak until it’s actually finished and ready for release (and please avoid asking about it).  In all liklihood, it will be a userland exploit like the first (unreleased) one, not dependent on bootrom dumps.  The first one can’t be released even for those with the original 4.3 firmware due to legal (distribution) reasons.

Update (Read the latest update at the bottom of this page): iPhone 4 users have reported some problem due to which untether jailbreak has been removed from this new Redsn0w 0.9.6 RC 13 version temporarily for iPhone 4. Until @i0nic doesn’t fix the probelm, Redsn0w 0.9.6 RC 13 provides tethered jailbreak on iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.3.2.

Only a few weeks after the 4.3.1 untether created by @i0n1c was released, Apple pushed out firmware 4.3.2. Thankfully, it appears Apple didn’t have a chance to fix the hole used by @i0n1c’s untether, so he ported his code over to 4.3.2’s kernel.  Today’s redsn0w has been updated to include it.

The 4.3.2 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.2 except for the iPad2:

• iPhone3GS
• iPhone4 (GSM) iPhone4 users please wait for a pending fix
• iPod touch 3G
• iPod touch 4G
• iPad1

As always, ultrasn0w unlockers should stay away from redsn0w and only update their firmware through a custom IPSW. We’ll release a new version of PwnageTool sometime this week.

Note that many people are currently having problems updating to 4.3.2 through saurik’s server. You’ll need to remove the gs.apple.com entry in your hosts file in order to restore directly to Apple’s servers.
