Google has rolled out a new version of Google Maps for android based mobile phones. Google Maps 4.4 is compatible will all those mobiles which have been updated to android 1.6 or later.

The significant changes in v4.4 are introduction of a new logo and a new icon “Places” to look up nearby places. You can either find your required places in the default categories or you can also make your own categories according to your profession or interest such as “Gas Stations”, “Hospitals” etc.

There is also ‘Place Pages’ to show the operating hours of business, distance and direction from your current location to new location.

On Android-powered phones with Google Maps 4.4, you’ll find the new Places icon in the app launcher with the rest of your apps. Press and drag it right onto your home screen to use it when you’re looking for a restaurant, shoe store, movie theater or any other type of local business. You’ll get a detailed list of all the nearest places and can choose one to learn more about it on its Place Page.
