How to Enable 720P HD Video Recording on iPhone 3GS

Earlier we showed you how to enable the HDR Photos on iPhone 3GS and 3G, but this little tweak enables HD video recording at 1080×800 resolution @ 30fps on iPhone 3GS running on iOS 4.1.

In order to enable HD videos your iPhone must be jailbroken. Jailbreak allows you to remove those restrictions and limitations which Apple imposes in the software for old versions of iDevices just to raise the sale of new models i.e., iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

Note: It is tested on iPhone 3GS running on iOS 4.1 only. Backup all your files and data before you  perform such hacks. Here is the step by step HOW TO guide to enable the HD recording:

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone if it is not already jailbreaked. Different tools are available for this purpose like Limera1n, Greenpoison and PwnageTool (in case you rely on unlock and want to keep the existing baseband).

Step 2: SSH into your iPhone 3GS. Head over to this post for more details.

Step 3: Download the pre-edited file

Step 4: Copy N88AP.plist to /System/Library/CoreServices/

Step 5: Copy the 3 other plist files to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/

Step 6: Reboot your iPhone 3GS and record HD videos.

This hack also enables still image shutter. But if you don’t like the shuttering when taking the stills, here is another similar hack by Antoninygaard ( for 960X540 resolution with playback on the iphone and upload to youtube feature). Jailbreak, SSH into your iPhone and download these pre-edited files and follow the instructions gives in the readme file to enable HD recording without shuttering.
