The good news is that we can jailbreak all A4 based iDevices with the latest version of Redsn0w, though iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak on all these devices is still tethered. For those who are not following the updates, Apple released iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 3 / 2 / 1, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G / 4G few hours ago. Besides adding one more digit at the end, this minor update doesn’t bring any new changes. Instead, it includes some bug fixes related to AirPlay, purchases and HDR.
We don’t recommend any of jailbreaker and unlockers, especially those who are interested to get untethered jailbreak in near future, to install iOS 5.1.1 on their devices. However, if you feel easy with tethered jailbreak, which requires the devices to be connected with PC after every reboot, and you have an A4 or earlier version of iDevice, you can upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 and then jailbreak with Redsnow.
Here is the guide for iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak:
Note: This jailbreak will not work for A5 devices i.e., iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 (aka the new iPad).
Step 1: Download and unzip the latest version of redsnow.
Step 2: Download and save iOS 5.1 iPSW file of your device. Here are the direct download links.
Step 3: Back up and sync your device with iTunes.
Step 4: Upgrade your device to iOS 5.1.1.
Step 5: Launch Redsn0w, go to Extras and click on “Select iPSW”. Browse to the location where you saved iOS 5.1 and select it.
Step 6: Now go to main page of redsnow and select “Jailbreak”
Step 7: Put your device into DFU mode by following the on-screen instructions.
Step 8: Let Redsn0w do the rest of work on your device.
Step 9: After the device reboots, go to Extras and select “Boot Tethered” and follow the instructions.
Step 10: Enjoy! Now you have a tethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbroken device.
