Developers were playing around with the GM build of the Mac OS X Lion just a few weeks back as Apple had released it to select registered developers. This version of the OS X is heavily influenced by the iOS platform made common by the iPhones and iPads. According to Apple the Mac OS X lion boasts of over 250 new features and is touted as their most advanced operating system yet.
Lion is the best version of OS X yet, and we’re thrilled that users around the world can download it starting today,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Lion makes upgrading a Mac easier than ever before; just launch the Mac App Store, buy Lion with your iTunes account, and the download and install process will begin automatically.
The quick lowdown of the major significant new features in the Mac OS X Lion is as follows:
- Laucnhpad: iOS inspired homescreen and dock that displays all apps in one place
- Misson control: Gives an eagle’s eye view of your desktop and can take you anywhere with a single swipe
- Email: iOS style email client built in the operating system for easy email access
- Resume: Loads apps back exactly from its previous state after quitting or relaunching of an application
- AirDrop: Automatic peer-to-peer wireless connection with near-by Mac’s for quick transfer of files
This is certainly the easiest Mac OS to set up. All you have to do is to purchase it through the Mac App Store and the rest takes care of itself. One purchase is enough for all your Mac’s synced with your Apple ID , although your system needs to be upgraded to OS X 10.6.8 before installation.
Another interesting attribute of the Mac OS X Lion is that it is only available via the Mac App Store and would not be available on DVD, although a latest update suggests that Apple would make it available on a USB flash drive some time later.
