Last week we shared the news that VLC player for iPhone has been submitted for approval and finally it has been approved by Apple. It is to remind you that VLC for iPad is already available but this new version also brings support for iPod Touch and iPhone running on iOS 3.2 or later.
VLC is a free and open source multimedia player. It reads almost every video file, yet it’s very powerful and simple to use.
What’s New in Version 1.1.0.:
– Runs on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the recent iPod touches
– You can now delete files from the application, without having to go through iTunes
– Many more extensions are being recognized.
– Much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimizations
Here is the VLC preview video shared by 9to5mac last week:

I can see using this as a way to view video files I’ve saved to Dropbox without having to convert with iFunia video converter and sync through iTunes. Certainly a time saver. Are there other advantages I’m missing? Other than flash vids, I’m not really experiencing any situations where I can’t view videos on my iPhone 3GS.
